The last time Mira saw an was in her grandmother’s village house, tucked behind a dusty photo frame. The small plastic box, with its phone jack and blinking green LEDs, had long been disconnected, but she couldn’t bring herself to remove it.

She smiled. The ADSL panel wasn’t a relic of slow speeds and busy signals. It was a lighthouse. A blinking green promise that somewhere, someone was waiting for her message to arrive, packet by broken packet, through the static and the rain. The last time Mira saw an was in
