The dinnerless dinner party with his sister Devon (Jen Tullock) and her friend Ricken (Michael Chernus) is painfully real. Ricken is the kind of insufferable intellectual who mistakes verbosity for depth (“Whose truth is the truth?”). But the scene isn’t just comedy. It’s the outside world trying—and failing—to understand Mark’s choice. Devon is worried. Ricken is performatively curious.
